The current banner shows Alnwick Castle, in Northumberland - a county in the far north east of England, bordering Scotland.  This region is home to a number of Appleby lines - and our DNA project has confirmed genetic connections between several of these, which also match lines in Canada, USA and Ireland.

Since setting up the Appleby DNA Project, we have tried whenever possible to offer a subsidised test kit to the first male descendant from each Appleby line to  volunteer to take a yDNA test. DNA testing is expensive (a 37 marker yDNA kit with discount for surname projects normally costs $150 plus p+p) and as we all benefit from the results, it seems only fair that we should all contribute towards the cost of testing.  We currently aim to ask our volunteers for a contribution of around 50% towards the cost of their own kit, but as a small non-profit making organisation* it is very hard to attract funding to subsidise the costs of purchasing kits.

Since the start of this project, various generous members have made donations into our General Fund at Family Tree DNA, either to pay for someone else to test on their behalf or to express their thanks for our assistance with their family history research. We are most grateful to these kind folk (you know who you all are!)   The money held in this Fund can only be set against the purchase of new kits or upgrades to existing kits.

However, the Guild of One-Name Studies has recently negotiated an agreement with Family Tree DNA for the Guild to provide discounted test kits to members who run DNA projects.  These are priced at £80 incl of post and packing, which works out cheaper than buying kits from ftDNA, even during their flash sales.  As the Appleby One-Name Study is a member of the Guild, we would like to benefit from these reduced rates - but it means we need to collect donations ourselves in order to purchase these kits in £ sterling.  Wherever you live in the World, you can make online payments in £ sterling, however depending on the method you use (PayPal, debit card, credit card) you may be charged a small fee to cover the exchange rate.

If you have any concerns about using Paypal or other online banking and would prefer to use a different method to make a donation, please use the Contact Form to get in touch.

* The Appleby Research Organisation and associated DNA Project is run by three enthusiastic genealogists on an entirely voluntary basis.  We do not even receive expenses for overheads such as maintaining websites.

If you have been helped by this site and would like to make a donation into our General Fund, which will be used to purchase yDNA kits or upgrades to existing kits when necessary, please click the button below, which will take you to our PayPal account. (If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also make your payment securely online with a credit or debit card from the payment form)

Please note: you will need to enter an amount in £ sterling on the PayPal form - currency exchange rates vary from day to day, but as a guide, a donation of £10.00 is roughly equivalent to

  • US $ 16.50

  • CAN $ 17.60

  • AUS $ 18.70

  • NZ $ 20.25

  • SA Rand 182

If you prefer to pay in US dollars, you can still continue to make donations in dollars into our General Fund at Family Tree DNA by clicking the DONATE button on our Group Project page - we can use such donations to purchase upgrades - however, it would save us money if you used the PayPal account above to pay in £sterling ... see notes below.
